Lead and coordinate aquatic animal health research in Egypt and oversee timely delivery of high quality science products
Within the aquatic animal health research activities:
Identify priority research topics for Egypt and rest of Africa and develop and implement research plans
Contribute to collaborative research with feeds, husbandry, and genetics themes under the Fish CRP
Support gender integration into research design and research implementation
Conduct resource mobilization through bilateral fund raising for aquatic animal health research in line with WorldFish priorities
Develop and maintain key research and development partnerships including the private sector within Egypt and Africa
Supervise and mentor young scientists
Undertake preparation of research papers, project reporting and related communications outputs
Assume other responsibilities as agreed with Management

WorldFish is looking for a scientist with an aquatic animal health background to lead research and training on fish diseases in the WorldFish Egypt research program,
in the context of the overall WorldFish research strategy and FISH CGIAR Research Program (CRP). The position will be supported by and report to the fish health specialist based in WorldFish HQ and the Egypt Country Director. They will also support the work of other scientists working for WorldFish in Egypt and Africa.
With the gradual intensification of fish production systems in Egypt the threat from pathogens has increased. In recent years, there have been significant mortalities of tilapia in pond-based aquaculture systems (Summer mortality syndrome) and a new virus has recently been identified in Egypt - Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV). One of the immediate priorities for the Aquatic Animal Health Scientist will be to investigate the links between summer mortality and TiLV with the aim of developing mitigation strategies that can be adopted by Egyptian fish farmers.
The scientist is also expected to manage the fish health laboratory at the Abbassa Research Center, to coordinate training on fish health, to provide diagnostic services for the Egyptian fish farm industry, to represent WorldFish at relevant meetings and conferences and produce research outputs in the form of training materials, reports, policy briefs and scientific publications in internationally peer-reviewed journals.

Desired Skills and Experience
PhD in Aquaculture or Veterinary Science-
At least 5-8 years of relevant research and development experience-
Research leadership, coordination, communication and project cycle management skills-
Strong publications record including peer-reviewed science products in international journals
Proven fund raising experience-
Excellent English and Arabic language, writing and communication skills-
Commitment to a poverty reduction and food and nutrition security agenda-
Ability and willingness to travel-
Timeframe and location
This position will be based at WorldFish's office in Cairo and at the Abbassa Research
Center, Sharkia, Egypt.
Interviews are expected to be held in Cairo, Egypt in February 2017 and short-listed
candidates should be available to attend.
The successful candidate should be available to commence as soon as possible for an initial 1 year fixed term contract, with the possibility of extension depending on performance and the availability of funding. Screening will start immediately. Only short-listed candidates will be notified.
